2023 Common Walk a great success

The 2023 Common Walk was the first public one to be held since the pandemic and turned out to be a great success. Over 230 people took part and they were blessed with good weather, beautiful scenery and welcome refreshments at the breakfast and lunchtime stops. The event does not simply happen but requires the effort and co-operation of a veritable army of helpers for which I would like to publicly give my thanks and the thanks of the Corporation.

These days not all of the walk is across Corporation land, and we are grateful for the landowners who gave consent to cross their property to be able to continue this historic tradition. This can sometimes be challenging where, for example, crops are growing or livestock are grazing and in future we will work to further improve routes and minimise disruption.

Much of the route is cleared and stiles erected in advance by volunteers and at 6.00am on the morning of the walk the ladies of the Corporation continue their work from the previous evening in preparing hundreds of sandwiches and organising drinks for the walkers. Apparently cheese and pickle was the number one favourite this year! Local businesses from builders and bakers to breweries and flagstaff makers support the event and I am delighted the Common Walk has yet again brought the community together in such an enjoyable way. Here’s to the next walk in 2026!

Thank you, diolch yn fawr Matthew Thomas, Portreeve
